How Do I Know If a Solar System Is the Right Size for My Home?
"Fill the roof" isn't always the best strategy. Why each panel should earn its place, and how batteries change the equation.
The best solar system isn't necessarily the biggest one—it's the one that's best matched to your home. One of the most common pieces of advice homeowners hear is: "Install as many panels as your roof will hold."
Sometimes that's exactly the right decision. But often, adding more panels provides surprisingly little additional value. The ideal system size depends on your electricity usage, your utility's buyback policy, whether you're installing battery storage, and what you hope to accomplish with your investment.
"Fill the Roof" Isn't Always the Best Strategy
It's easy to understand why this advice is so common. If solar panels save money, then more panels should save even more money... right?
Not necessarily. The first panels you install typically offset electricity that you would have purchased from your utility at full retail rates. Those panels often provide the greatest financial value. As your system grows larger, however, it may begin producing more electricity than your home is using at certain times of the day. That excess electricity is usually sent back to the utility grid.
Many utilities compensate exported electricity at a lower value than the electricity you purchase from the grid. As a result, each additional panel may produce less financial benefit than the one before it. More solar production does not always translate into more financial value.
When More Panels Make Sense
There are many situations where a larger solar array is the right choice. For example, you may expect your electricity usage to increase because you plan to:
- Purchase an electric vehicle
- Install a heat pump or electric water heater
- Add a swimming pool or hot tub
- Finish additional living space
The key is making that decision intentionally—not simply filling available roof space because it's available.
Batteries Change the Equation
Battery storage can significantly increase the value of additional solar panels. Without batteries, excess daytime production is often exported to the grid. With batteries, that same excess production may instead recharge your battery for use after sunset or during a power outage.
That means the "right" system size for a home with battery storage is different from the right size for a home without batteries. Sizing the solar array and battery together produces better results than evaluating each independently.
That value isn't measured only by annual energy production. Each additional panel should be evaluated based on questions like:
- How much will it reduce my electric bills?
- Will I actually use the electricity it produces?
- Will it improve battery performance?
- Will it increase my home's resilience during an outage?
- Does it meaningfully improve my long-term financial return?
